Early 2013 is going to be the time of year that Marvel Minimates fans will have the perfect response to the question, "What's Cap'penning?" Because... well... there's just a bunch of Captain America characters in Series 54, okay?! Jeeeez.

For this series, Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum have turned their attention to Captain America and his comic book exploits. And not just any, either -- there's some weird stuff in the mix.

Having already done up Cap in his full-on "Fighting Chance" armor back in 2010 (among roughly 30 other variations), the toymakers are giving cap his initial life-prolonging gadget vest (it had airbags and springs!) from Mark Gruenwald's mid '90s Captain America #425-443 run. Vest-y Cap comes packaged with "Robot Red Skull," aka Red Skull downloaded into an Arnim Zola style bod after he got shot in Captain America #42 in 2008.

The rest of the series pairings include Winter Soldier and Falcon (with Redwing), plus a Hydra Elite soldier packed with either Baron Strucker or the variant Madame Hydra/Viper.

Somewhat surprisingly, this is the first time in the Marvel Minimates' more than 10-year history that Falcon has gotten a figure. Besides Cap, it's true of every character (or at least character incarnations in the case of Red Skull and the Hyrda soldier), meaning this wave should please collectors seeking all-new figures.
