Following up on the Thor material for which he is perhaps best known, cartoonist Walter Simonson announced at Comic-Con that he's created Ragnarök, a creator-owned Norse mythology project to be released through IDW Publishing. Additionally, Simonson confirmed that IDW will produce deluxe editions of his cult favorite science fiction title Star Slammers.

“[Editor] Scott Dunbier and I first talked about me working on a creator-owned book involving the Norse gods 15 years ago, but as many of my former editors can tell you, I've always regarded deadlines as useful fictions,” said Walter Simonson in a press release. “So here we are... finally! All I can say is that I've loved the stories of the Viking gods since I was eight. I am thrilled that with IDW's help and support, I'm launching an ongoing series of stories built around a new vision of some old friends. And enemies.”

Simonson's remarks suggest that readers of his classic Thor work will see some familiar names in Ragnarök -- indeed, the Norse gods are of course public domain. Ragnarök will launch in 2014.

IDW and Simonson also announced plans to represent the cartoonist's Star Slammers, which is very good news for those of us who've heard of this work for years but have never had the chance to read it. IDW breaks it down easily in their press release:

Originally appearing in 1983, Star Slammers featured intergalactic mercenaries-for-hire who went into the business of war, and became the most successful businessmen of all time.

In addition to remastering and recoloring the existing Star Slammers material, IDW will produce an Artist's Edition of the work. It will be the publisher's second book of Simonson comics scanned in high resolution from the original pages and reprinted at actual size.
