Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. opting to include an iteration of  in Season 4 opens any number of doors for new Marvel characters, but comic fans may also have picked up on Robbie Reyes’ connection to Daisy Johnson’s father, played in Season 2 by Kyle MacLachlan. Agents bosses have their own spin on the new Ghost Rider’s origin, but will we see Daisy’s dad return this year?

Speaking with TVLine at the TCA press tour last week, co-showrunner Jed Whedon kept coy on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 utilizing the exact circumstances of Robbie Reyes’ comic Ghost Rider origins, which featured Reyes gunned down over a shipment of drugs belonging to “Mr. Hyde,” Daisy’s father Calvin’s alter-ego. Said Whedon:

We can’t say much about what we’re going to do with [Robbie Reyes’] origin, but we are doing our own spin on it. We don’t want people who have read the comics to know exactly what’s coming.

Itself, that sounds like a pretty common refrain among superhero TV series like S.H.I.E.L.D. or even The Flash, which keep coy about adapting major twists, only to wind up at the source material in a roundabout way. TVLine also noted that fans would be thrilled to see Kyle MacLachlan’s Calvin again, to which Whedon replied “so would we,” while the Season 3 finale did allude to Daisy having a veterinarian “friend” with whom she’d been in contact.

Early set videos have also placed Chloe Bennet’s Daisy in early contact with Reyes, so might Kyle MacLachlan be far behind? Stay tuned for the latest on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4.
