Apart from bidding Ghost Rider a fiery farewell, Agents of SHIELD midseason finale “The Laws of Inferno Dynamics” also gave Jason O’Mara’s Jeffrey Mace a costumed debut as Marvel’s “Patriot.” There’s still something elusively sinister about the new SHIELD director, for which a new 2017 press release promises we’ll discover a shocking secret behind “The Patriot.”

Season 4 will return on January 10 with the LMD-centric “Broken Promises,” but a new press release for January 17 follow-up “The Patriot” teases a deeper dive into Jeffrey Mace’s secrets. Not only that, but the hour also marks the return of Adrian Pasdar as Brigadier General Glenn Talbot:

“The Patriot” – Separated from their team, Coulson and Mack discover a shocking secret about Mace, leaving all of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a precarious position, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” TUESDAY, January 17 (10:00–11:00 p.m. EST), on the ABC Television Network.

Guest starring are Jason O’Mara as Director Jeffrey Mace, Mallory Jansen as Aida, Adrian Pasdar as Brigadier General Glenn Talbot, Maximillian Osinski as Agent Davis, Patrick Cavanaugh as Burrows, Troy Caylak as Yuri Zaikin, Kimberley Drummond as Agent Crawford, Shelly Robertson as Michelle Caldwell and Alastair Bayardo as Agent McCafferty.

If we had to guess, it could be that Mace isn’t actually an Inhuman at all, but rather some remnant of the Super-Soldier program that birthed Captain America. In the comics at least, Mace’s name is associated with having taken up the Captain America mantle once or twice, albeit without actual superpowers.

You can catch the latest “Broken Promises” trailer for SHIELD’s 2017 return below, and stay tuned for more toward January 10.
