Although cosplay has been present for decades within the comics, anime, and sci-fi/fantasy fandoms, social media has played an integral role in the thriving communities of costuming that exist, such as Cosplay.com and the Superhero Costuming Forum. Over the years, the cosplay community has evolved into a creative outlet for many fans to establish and showcase some impressive feats of homemade disguise, craftsmanship, and sartorial superheroics at conventions. In honor of the caped crusaders of the convention scene, ComicsAlliance has created Best Cosplay Ever (This Week), an ongoing collection of some of the most impeccable, creative, and clever costumes that we’ve discovered and assembled into a super-showcase of pure fan-devoted talent.

Shoes of Prey: Comics Alliance Designs Superhero Footwear Based on Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Batwoman and More

Untitled-142

Fashion brand Shoes of Prey used its customizable design website to style some superhero-inspired heels and flats as examples of footwear that customers can tweak and purchase for themselves with the Shoes of Prey 3D Designer, which gives the wearer selection of colors, materials, and alter various detailing parameters such as heel height, toe and heel detailing.. Each pair of shoes is handmade to fit the customer's chosen aesthetics and run at least $100 per pair.

As a fan of both Shoes of Prey and comics, customer Mandy Kerr designed some heels and flats inspired by Batman, Iron Man, and more (seen in the grahguc below). Inspired by Kerr's excellent Robin-inspired oxfords, I utilized the Shoes of Prey 3D Designer to create a few of my own shoe designs, including flats and platformed wedges inspired by Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Batwoman, and more.

IKEA Battles Cosplay Clutter In Singaporean ‘Bedroom Stories’ Campaign [Video]

Untitled-1

As a cosplayer who currently resides in a rather cozy secret lair (aka a small apartment in Boston), one of my continuous obstacles is being able to neatly organize all of my clothing, collectibles, and costumes in a confined space, while still maintaining enough space for sewing and prop-building. Ever since I started cosplaying, I've always been envious of the spacious secret headquarters and hideouts of the characters that I was emulating, especially the heroes who had the space to display all of their previous incarnations of their costumes and their entire artillery of weapons and gadgets. Since most of us will probably never be able to own our own Batcave (let alone, Wayne Manor), organization is the best weapon for storing your alter-egos and preventing the chaotic mess of fabric and Worbla in your limited work space.

In an installment of IKEA Singapore's series of "IKEA Bedroom Stories" commercials, Frank (civil servant by day, cosplayer by night) describes his room as an "organized mess" of costumes, craft supplies, and action figures. Like many cosplayers, Frank struggles to keep his limited space tidy and orderly while working on costumes and props, which often results in an inevitable chaos of fabric and scattered costume pieces (an issue that I am all too familiar with during convention season).

Best Cosplay Ever (This Week): Babs Tarr Inspiration Edition [Interview]

This week, we're looking at cosplay inspired by the work of illustrator Babs Tarr. Best known in fandom circles for her Bosozoku Sailor Scouts piece, Tarr's art frequently incorporates a combination of femininity and toughness in both her original work and redesigns of licensed characters, creating a world where magical women and girl gangs are one in the same. With the onslaught of cosplayers creating their own takes on classic characters and pulling inspiration from fan redesigns, it's not surprising that Tarr's provocative style and whimsical aesthetic have caught the eye of stylish fans and inspired many cosplayers to incorporate her designs into their costumes. We spoke to Tarr about her work and about the cosplay that her work has inspired.
