Here’s something that bothered me about that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice nightmare sequence: why does he continue to wear the mask? I get the body armor; I can even set aside the whole ‘Batman-doesn’t-kill’ thing and accept the machine gun he wears during the sequence. But why the mask? If we assume that the world has ended, there’s no real reason for him to keep his civilian identity a secret, and it’s not like audiences were going to be confused at who Ben Affleck was playing in the movie. Has Bruce Wayne just gotten used to getting up every morning and putting on eye black?

Those questions aside, the ‘knightmare’ sequence from Batman v Superman seems to be the version of these characters nearest and dearest to director Zack Snyder’s heart, a monochrome landscape of bulky costumes and gunfights. And thanks to the folks at Batman-News (via Heroic Hollywood), we can now get another look at what Snyder shared as Batman’s full desert costume, complete with a fetching summer scarf and the Joker card taped to his assault rifle. Even after an apocalypse brought on by a superpowered alien, Batman still seems incapable of letting go of his obsession with his arch-nemesis. Maybe the mask is actually the least of his worries.

Will we see ‘knightmare’ Batman return in future films? Wherever there is a Justice League, there are stories about alternate timelines where superheroes have gone rogue and entire cities have been wiped out by invading forces. We may not see this specific timeline ever again, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some new version of post-apocalyptic Batman found his way into the Justice League movie or sequels one more time. Who knows? Maybe next time Superman will be the hero and Batman will be the one leading a violent army.

If you’ve been waiting for the holidays to check out Batman v Superman, one, that’s a little weird, but two, here’s the full description of the movie to help you make up your mind:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before.

Justice League will hit theaters on November 17, 2017.
