‘Civil War’ Concept Art Pits Avengers Against Each Other

While all the talk today is justifiably on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, allow us to take a brief moment to look ahead to one of next year’s biggest movies, Captain America: Civil War. Following up on the film’s first trailer, we have an extra-wide piece of concept art that teases the big battle between the two sides of superheroes.

Drawn by Marvel’s in-house artists Andy Park & Ryan Meinerding, this art debuted in the pages of Total Film and highlights the battle between Iron Man and Captain America, Falcon and War Machine (although they call him War Hammer, which is either a typo or a major new title change for Rhodey), Black Panther and the Winter Soldier, Vision and Scarlet Witch, and Black Widow and Ant-Man.

We didn’t see either Vision or Ant-Man in the film’s trailer, so it’s nice to get a look at them here, though a little weird to see Ant-Man about to punch Black Widow in the face. Also, what the hell is Hawkeye doing back there? Everybody’s got some business to attend to and Hawkeye is just laying in the cut, waiting for his moment to do…something.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters on May 6, 2016.
