Chris Evans Will Keep Playing Captain America for Marvel for as Long as They Like
It’s been kind of a big week for Marvel — we haven’t really covered it here, but the company had a bit of a shakeup, as Marvel Studios disengaged from Marvel Entertainment, with Kevin Feige taking the movie end of things over to Disney and gaining more control over the MCU. On the heels of that major news, Chris Evans has revealed that he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Clearly things are pretty good over at Marvel right now.
Last year Evans said that he was considering stepping away from acting to focus on directing (he recently made his directorial debut on Before We Go), but the Avenger has officially changed his tune. In an interview with Collider, Evans says he’s not planning on leaving Marvel anytime soon, and as long as the studio wants him around, he’ll be there:
Listen, if Marvel wants me they got me. I’ve never had such a relationship where you have such—I mean look at my resume, I’m used to being on set being like, ‘Ah is this movie gonna be terrible?’ Marvel just can’t stop making great movies, they do it in their sleep. It’s wonderful directors and producers and actors and scripts, and it’s like a playground as an actor.
Evans’ current contract extends through Avengers: Infinity War – Part I and Part II, the latter of which hits theaters in 2019. If Evans did leave the MCU, many speculated that we’d see Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, aka Winter Soldier, picking up Cap’s shield and taking on the superhero mantle like he does in the comics.
But that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon — whatever Marvel does or doesn’t have in store for Cap, Evans will be there. Marvel Studios’ switch over to Disney is also a positive step, allowing Feige to exercise the sort of control he didn’t have when the company was tied to Marvel Entertainment and CEO Ike Perlmutter. Perlmutter’s incredibly conservative financial habits have been widely reported, along with his involvement in preventing Feige and Marvel Studios from diversifying their films (more women and minorities).
