There’s been plenty of debate over what role The Punisher will take in Daredevil Season 2, whether Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle will act as an opposing vigilante, or perhaps Matt Murdock’s new big bad altogether, but might Marvel point the way? The actor has shared a few Punisher comics as part of his research, which might also reveal The Kingpin’s role in Daredevil’s 2016 return.

Take this all with a minor grain of salt for now, as the MCU always cherry-picks from its comic inspiration, though Jon Bernthal has been spotted on social media several times now sharing a bit of light reading for his punishing new role. In addition to hitting up comic shops in Ventura, Bernthal can be seen with a 2010 issue of Punisher MAX in which Frank Castle reflects on his family from solitary confinement during a prison riot. Also present in the shot is 1986's Punisher: Circle of Blood, which features Frank Castle falsely claiming to have killed the Kingpin, setting in motion a city turf war that teaches Frank about violence begetting violence.

Additionally, Bernthal shared his own photo of 2009 Garth Ennis (Preacher) run Punisher: War Zone - The Resurrection of Ma Gnucci, in which Frank Castle attempts (repeatedly) to put down the Gnucci crime family, and squares off with a new version of supervillain “Elite.”

Thus far of Daredevil Season 2, we know that Rosario Dawson has been confirmed to reprise her role as Claire Temple, while Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez will take over showrunning duties from Spartacus vet Steven S. DeKnight, with Drew Goddard remaining onboard as a consultant. Recent audition tapes seemingly confirmed that Elektra would appear in the second season, while recent Jason Statham / Bullseye reports also listed Marvel’s Mister Fear and Spider-Man villain Mysterio as potential villains.

We’ll hear more major Daredevil Season 2 casting before long, but which Punisher arcs might influence Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle?
