‘Doctor Strange’ Adds Martial Arts Badass Scott Adkins
Doctor Strange boasts an excellent cast and promises to take the MCU in a very weird, very mystical direction — but will there be, you know, any action? For those who were concerned that Marvel’s latest might not be as action-heavy as its predecessors, fear not, as director Scott Derrickson has tapped martial arts pro and action star Scott Adkins, ensuring that Doctor Strange will come with a little kick.
The Wrap reports that Adkins has been added to the cast of Doctor Strange, joining a lineup that includes Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Sorcerer Supreme, Chiwetel Ejiofor as the dubious Baron Mordo, Michael Stuhlbarg as Dr. Nicodemus West, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, and Mads Mikkelsen and Rachel McAdams in mystery roles (though the latter may very well be playing Night Nurse).
Adkins is known to more general audiences for his roles in The Expendables 2, in which he was an effective henchman for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s villain, and The Bourne Ultimatum, in which he was a super spy. He’s also had supporting roles in films like The Legend of Hercules and Zero Dark Thirty. But fans of the martial arts expert are more familiar with his lesser-known action film credits, many of which are direct-to-video, including Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing, Undisputed 3: Redemption, and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning.
Adkins has a substantial fan base, many of whom will be thrilled with his casting in Doctor Strange, which will reportedly give the actor “several major action scenes featuring hand-to-hand combat,” though the details of his specific role are unknown.
Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4, 2016.
