We haven’t even made it through Halloween yet, but why wait for Doctor Who to get us in the mood for Christmas? The TARDIS is back on the scene and taking aim at superheroes, as The BBC releases a new preview for 2016 Christmas special “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” along with a first synopsis.

Piggybacking off the recent reveal that Shameless alum Justin Chatwin would join the 2016 Christmas special in a superheroic role, The BBC has released a new extended preview for “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” cut together with the footage released at New York Comic-Con. In addition, a first synopsis gives a more detailed look at the plot:

The hit BBCA series will return on Christmas day as the Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, teams up with an investigative journalist, played by Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall, The Player) and a superhero to save New York from a deadly alien threat.

Elsewhere, in addition to Michelle Gomez’s likely return as Missy and Matt Lucas’ return as Nardole, Season 10 will also feature Jekyll & Hyde star Stephanie Hyam in a minor role. Pearl Mackie will also joined in the role of new companion Bill, while Peter Capaldi has suggested Jenna Coleman’s Clara might return in some form.

As to the next run itself, Capaldi himself has only officially signed through the coming tenth season, despite having been asked to return after Steven Moffat’s last season in spring 2017. Following Moffat’s exit, Chris Chibnall will sub in as the new head writer and executive producer, to begin after Season 10.

We’ll learn more soon, but what new Doctor Who, but what else should we look forward to from “The Return of Doctor Mysterio”?
