We knew as far back as Comic-Con 2015 that The Flash would face off against “Zoom” in Season 2, though even among comic fans, the name didn’t provide the clearest picture of Barry’s new big bad. Now, we at least have a voice in Candyman legend Tony Todd, as well as a few new details on the Venom-like “speed demon.”

Variety landed the news that Todd would voice the character as early on as second Season 2 installment “Flash of Two Worlds,” though unlike with last year’s Reverse-Flash (who himself can also go by “Professor Zoom” in comics, hence the confusion), The CW’s Zoom may not be a physical being at all, despite his Darth Vader-esque voice. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg teased the character as more of a demonic speedster, whose “organic” costume shared a certain aesthetic with Spider-Man villain Venom:

Last year, with the Reverse-Flash, we just modulated Tom Cavanagh’s voice, and this year we wanted to do something a little bit different. Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader — this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.

The Zoom outfit is much more organic than the Reverse-Flash suit. In a way, it’s hard to tell if it is a suit or alive… There’s no skin showing, for all you know there’s a robot underneath, or dark energy.

Likening Zoom’s “identity” to that of a horror movie killer teased throughout the season, Kreisberg also offered up a bit of the figure’s “primal” vendetta against The Flash:

For us, the best villains are the ones who don’t have megalomaniacal ‘I want to rule the world’ motivations. Last year, the Reverse-Flash had a very simple goal which was, ‘I just want to go home, and if people need to die or cities need to get wasted for me to get that, so be it.’ And Zoom has a very similar, personal goal this season… simple and easy to understand, and very primal. And just as with Wells last year, Zoom doesn’t care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed in the service of him getting his goal.

Elsewhere, we know of The Flash Season 2 that The Messengers alum Shantel VanSanten will guest as DC character and Barry’s new love interest Patty Spivot, joining Masters of Sex alum Teddy Sears as Golden Age speedster Jay Garrick, Insurgent star Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West, Adam “Edge” Copeland’s Atom Smasher, Violett Beane as Jesse Quick and Demore Barnes as Firestorm villain Tokamak. We’ll also see the returns of Gorilla Grodd, Captain Cold and Golden Glider (including their father), and likely others, while both Barry (and Jay!) have some spiffy new duds.
