It’s been several months since The CW first announced an additional animated Arrow-verse series beyond Vixen, aiming to adapt Freedom Fighters: The Ray. Said universe has been understandably busy in recent weeks, but producers tease that The Ray is assembling an “ambitious” writing staff that ties into some larger news about Vixen.

Collider spoke with Arrow boss and executive producer Marc Guggenheim for an update on Freedom Fighters: The Ray, which follow the title character of a Golden Age hero who can manipulate, and become light for various purposes. As with Vixen star Megalyn E.K., the role will be cast in mind for an eventual live-action debut, though Guggenheim teased news would be coming on both those fronts:

We just finished the outline for [Freedom Fighters:] The Ray. I’ve got my writing staff assembled, we’re all working on it. I’m actually really excited about it, not just because the project’s cool, but because basically we’re going about writing it a different way than we did Vixen. It’s a bit more ambitious. It ties into an announcement that’s going to be made about Vixen pretty soon. So expect a Vixen announcement that I think is very, very cool, and we’re moving forward on The Ray.

It wouldn’t seem likely of The CW to move forward on a full-fledged live-action Vixen series just yet, given four series already on the air, and the fact that Legends of Tomorrow already features Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Mari McCabe’s grandmother. Still, the announcement might pertain to another guest appearance for E.K, perhaps with the actor playing The Ray in tow.

So reads the synopsis for Freedom Fighters: The Ray, which will also notably represent the title hero as a gay character:

Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.

We’ll learn more with the mysterious announcement, but in the meantime, both seasons of Vixen are available to stream on CW Seed.
