Once the patron saint of TV rescues, Netflix seems more focused on its own original content than picking up stragglers, but the wealth of Marvel content had Agent Carter fans optimistic Peggy might live out Season 3 on the streaming service. Sadly not so, as Netflix bosses now admit “it was a business decision more than a creative one.”

Via Entertainment Weekly, Netflix boss Ted Sarandos noted not only that the company’s brand seeks to find new properties they can own, but also that Agent Carter’s existing deals would complicate things. Netflix already has a wealth of comic dramas as is, while Sarandos says:

We’re looking for truly original brands to own, and in that Marvel space we already have [original comic book shows] – so that was mostly why … [Marvel also has] some output deal complexities, so when you pick it up, being able to pick it up globally is difficult even after it’s canceled. Some of those output partners still had it on the air, so they would argue its covered by their output [deals]. Unfortunately, it was a business decision more than a creative one.

So far as we know, Season 3 of Marvel’s Agent Carter would have explored a bit of Peggy’s family history, particularly as regard to her lost brother, as well as her own war record. There’s every chance Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 could pick up a few loose threads (Hayley Atwell remains with ABC for Conviction), but it looks like the Netflix ship has formally sailed.

Whether or not we see Agent Carter again, would Netflix have been a better home?
