By now many fans have read DC's Injustice: Gods Among Us prequel comic and have a basic understanding of the character motivations in NetherRealm's upcoming post-apocalyptic fighting game that pits heroes and villains against... villain-y heroes and heroic-ish villains? It's a turbulent elseworld where up is down and down is up, with two characters proving especially puzzling: The Joker and Harley Quinn. Who are they, and what are they fighting for? A new trailer provides some insight. Potential spoilers ahead.

Readers saw the Joker disposed of by a very angry Superman after the clown prince of crime tricked the Man of Steel into killing Lois Lane and their unborn child in the DC Comics tie-in (which proved a pretty polarizing plot development), but he's been a known playable character and the central face on box art more or less since the game was announced. The new trailer explains that the experience made Harley Quinn change her ways and that a potentially new (or perhaps the original? Or revived? Or a clone? Or... um... time traveling?) Joker is in Gotham, which messes with her already fractured psyche.

Fans will have to wait until April 16 to find out what the full deal is with Harley and Mystery Joker, which Injustice: Gods Among Us drops on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the Wii U.
