Especially after the breakout success of Luke Cage, fans of Marvel’s Netflix Defenders have understandable reservations about Iron Fist measuring up, with another martial arts figure in a less-diverse cast. Star Finn Jones wants fans to reserve their judgement, however, promising the series will acknowledge its troublesome ‘70s origins.

Jones made the rounds of New York Comic-Con just hours after finishing filming on the Netflix series and debuting its first formal trailer, taking a few questions from ComicBook.com in the meantime. There’s an air of uncertainty around Iron Fist, especially after early calls to cast the character more in line with his Asian origins, though Jones did his best to allay concerns of cultural appropriation:

What I would say to that is, people should wait, and watch the show before they pass judgment. We’re working with Netflix and Marvel, two of the most leading entertainment companies in the world right now. They know exactly what they’re doing.

The comic books were written in the ‘70s. 1970s was a very different world to 2016, and we’re going to reflect that. We have an incredibly diverse cast; incredibly talented. What I would say to that is, wait until you’ve seen the show, and then pass judgment, before you make comment, because people will be very, very, very pleasantly surprised with what we’re doing in the show.

There’s a long way to go between Jones’ words and the March premiere, while the new trailer only inspired so much confidence, but can Iron Fist surpass expectations, as the star claims?
