By now, you’ve all had a chance to watch, and re-watch, and re-re-watch, the trailer for Logan. What makes the film look so special  —  what separates it from the herd of superhero adaptations  —  is how little it looks like a superhero movie. If you knew nothing about Wolverine, you might think it’s just a fantasy or science-fiction story about an aging warrior tasked with looking after the future of his people. It’s an old tale in other genres but a breath of fresh air for a franchise typically more interested in fight scenes than pathos.

And perhaps the biggest standout of the trailer is newcomer Dafne Keen as the tough young mutant Wolverine is tasked to protect. Earlier today, Keen was the subject of another cryptic Instagram post from the official Logan account (via Heroic Hollywood), a post that also confirmed that Keen’s character is, in fact, Laura Kinney (aka X-23) of the Marvel comics:

If you know your X-Men trivia (or are at least willing to read up on it), then you know Kinney is a female clone of Logan who spent her entire childhood within the Weapon X program. There she was bred and raised to be the perfect recreation of the experiment that gave Wolverine his adamantium claws; much like Logan himself, she was trained to be a living weapon and sent on multiple assassination missions while still nominally a child. Her main arc throughout her various appearances is as someone trying to atone for past sins, making her the perfect successor for Wolverine and a chance for him to help her be a better person than himself.

Here’s looking forward to seeing a lot more of Laura Kinney and Logan in action when Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
