The moment we learned Marvel’s Luke Cage would first appear in Jessica Jones, the question arose as to how the series might interact with one another in telling the former’s origin. Set photos seemingly confirmed Mike Colter’s Cage to already have his powers, so might that mean Luke Cage itself serves as an origin story to the character?

Taking part in the Jessica Jones hoopla at New York Comic-Con 2015 this past weekend, Colter cleared up a few questions of his own Defender series’ timeline, notably that Luke Cage would take place some months after the events of Jessica Jones. That isn’t to say that Luke Cage might eschew some sort of flashback to the character’s incarcerated origin, but Colter tells ComicBook.com we’ll first meet him as a fugitive in Jessica Jones, and pick up with his own story later:

I can tell you what they’ve allowed me to, which is basically, Luke Cage will take place a few months after Jessica Jones. So in real time, if you watch Jessica Jones, you’ll find [at the end] Luke Cage uptown in Harlem, working, trying to make ends meet. Luke Cage really hasn’t figured out what he’s doing. He’s tending bar, he’s bouncing around. And for good reason, he’s a fugitive, he has some skeletons in his closet … He’s trying to basically stay off the radar … So I can say you’ll find him uptown in Harlem, and in a completely different world from Hell’s Kitchen.

Thus far of Netflix’s Luke Cage, we know that Sons of Anarchy vet Theo Rossi will play “Shades” Alvarez, alongside Mahershala Ali’s Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, Alfre Woodard’s Mariah Dillard, Frank Whaley’s Detective Rafael Scarfe and Simone Missick’s Misty Knight. Marvel menace “Diamondback” has been rumored to appear, while Rosario Dawson has also been confirmed her reprise her go-between character of Claire Temple, who herself originated in Marvel comics as a love interest of Luke Cage. Cheo Hodari Coker will showrun the third Marvel Netflix drama.

Luke Cage will debut on Netflix at an unspecified point in 2016, following Jessica Jones’ November 20 release, but how might we explore the character’s past beyond what we learn in the upcoming series?
