Are you video game prey or are you the video game hunter? On December 5 Attack on Titan fans in Japan can ponder this question while fighting to protect humankind's walled stronghold from grotesque man-eating giants in Spike Chunsoft's Attack on Titan: Humanity's Last Wings on Nintendo 3DS. Announced a few months back, Famitsu has unveiled new screen shots from the game based on Hajime Isayama's AoT manga and its corresponding anime series.

According to Famitsu, the 3D action game's missions will put players in control of human protagonists Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert as they lead NPC allies in battle against invading titans by zipping around with Vertical Maneuvering Equipment and bladed weapons. Just like in the show, players will fight both to slay titans and to keep their fellow soldiers out of harm's way. Letting your comrades get eaten results in mission failure, but fortunately gameplay will allow players to free friends from titans by slashing limbs.

The game will feature both a story mode following the AoT manga and anime's main story, plus a multiplayer mode allowing four players to join forces against the titans. While only Eren, Mikasa and Armin have been confimred as playable so far, Levi and more may also make the final cut. What's more, though, the game will give players the opportunity to customize their own characters in multiplayer mode. It's unclear just how robust the customization options will be... but I doubt I'm alone in wanting to see a custom Spider-Man in the midst of a titan battle.

No word on when or if the game will make its way to North America, but considering the success of Kodansha's best-selling manga in the States and Funimation's plans to bring the anime to home video in 2014, it may eventually filter this direction. Until then, it'll be up to hardcore fans with Japanese 3DS systems to tell us how it plays in December.
