James Gunn Reveals ‘Fantastic Four’-‘Guardians’ Crossover Idea
As usual, James Gunn’s Facebook Q&A sessions yield some pretty interesting information, and while he tends to be a bit more open than others about his plans in the MCU, he doesn’t reveal anything too major. Still, Gunn’s latest Q&A confirms the two actors who won’t be returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, plus the two characters from Fantastic Four that he really wants to see join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

James Gunn is currently in production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so when recently asked if he’d return to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3, the director seemed uncertain about whether he wants to stick with Marvel or move on to something else. Marvel hasn’t formally revealed any of its Phase 4 films, but we’ve all just assumed that another Guardians sequel is part of that plan — according to Kevin Feige, that assumption is correct.

James Gunn has made it clear that he’s no longer responding to rumors regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so don’t expect the director to confirm or deny the latest report, which may reveal the names of three new characters. Take it with the usual grain of salt, but given how wild and weird the Guardians corner of the Marvel universe is, these names all sound fairly plausible.

James Gunn isn’t sure if he wants to return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but for the time being he’s focusing on the present — working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Marvel’s sequel will introduce us to Peter Quill’s long-lost father, teased in the first film with a vague hint about his space-dwelling parentage. Gunn remains tight-lipped about the character’s identity, but he has offered a new storyboard image for you to agonize over like a game of Marvel Pictionary.

James Gunn is currently filming massive superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, which is probably the worst possible time to ask a director if he wants to come back and start filming another massive superhero movie. While rewarding, making movies on this scale is an exhausting task. It’s like asking someone in the middle of running a marathon if they’re ready to run another marathon. Let’s just get through this marathon first. But, as Gunn was taking part in a Q&A with fans on Facebook, someone naturally asked if he’s going to return to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and Gunn was honest that while Marvel wants him to return, he’s not so sure he wants to.

Deadpool defied early predictions for a $65 million opening weekend and broke records with its $135 million box office take, validating Fox’s decision to green light a sequel before the film even properly hit theaters. The R-rated, hyper-violent, hyper-profane superhero flick is a hit, to say the least, and there’s a lesson to be learned from Fox taking a gamble on such a risky blockbuster — but Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, like many of us, fears that studios might wind up taking the wrong lesson from Deadpool’s success.
