‘Gambit’ Star Channing Tatum and Producer Reid Carolin Talk Accents, Costumes and the ‘X-Men’ Universe

gambit-feat

Now that Magic Mike XXL has been unleashed in theaters, we’re all moving on to Channing Tatum’s next big project: Gambit. The X-Men superhero’s solo movie was one we never thought could reasonably happen, especially after the horror of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But we’re in a new, better X-Men era, and Tatum — along with his producing partner Reid Carolin — are giving us even more hope with their latest update on the film.

Although it’s been rumored that Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine might appear in X-Men: Apocalypse, we now have confirmation that one of them will definitely not be showing up after all. According to Channing Tatum, you shouldn’t get your hopes up about a Gambit cameo in Bryan Singer’s upcoming sequel.

Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’ Movie Finds a Director in Rupert Wyatt

Marvel
Marvel

It’s no secret that a bunch of very interesting directors said no when Channing Tatum brought Gambit to their attention, but the film’s star/producer/cheerleader has finally gone and done it. He’s actually landed a genuinely interesting director to call the shots on the X-Men spin-off about a Cajun thief who throws exploding playing cards. Good luck, Rupert Wyatt. This is in your hands now.

Channing Tatum Says ‘Gambit’ Will Be an Unconventional Origin Story

Channing Tatum Gambit
Sony Pictures/Marvel

Yes, Channing Tatum is still planning to make that Gambit movie. He just needs a finished screenplay. And a director. And an angle that helps us forget that Gambit is one of the lamest X-Men to ever achieve inexplicable popularity. (Note: This is not the position of the editor of ComicsAlliance. Gambit is awesome.) Casting the intensely likable and charismatic Tatum goes a long away toward achieving that last goal, and in a new interview, the Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street star revealed that the first draft of the script has been turned in ... and that the movie will be an origin story, albeit one that won’t play by the normal superhero movie rules.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Will Reportedly Have Some Mutant Cameos, Obviously

Fox
Fox

Earlier today, we reported the rumor that not only has Captain Marvel been cast, but she’ll be making her first appearance in the already superhero-heavy Avengers: Age of Ultron. Having major superheroes make cameos or debut in other films from their respective studios has become the norm, so it’s hardly surprising to hear that X-Men: Apocalypse — which is said to primarily focus on the First Class cast — will feature a few cameos from other X-Men…including one pretty exciting mutant in particular.

Magic Clark: A Moment Of Appreciation For Emanuela Lupacchino’s Hunkstice League of Absmerica

j-l-abs-hed

We already praised DC's movie-themed variant covers last week, and it feels safe to say there's plenty of great work on show here from Dave Johnson, Bill Sienkiewicz, Marco D'Alphonso et al; this is a variant month that justifies its existence through excellence.

But I want to draw particular attention to just one cover, which I think deserves special recognition for oustanding achievement in its field. I refer, of course, to Emanuela Lupacchino's cover for Justice League #40 in the style of a poster for the 2010 Steven Soderbergh movie Magic Mike, which re-imagines the Justice League boys as oiled-up strippers.

DC Heroes Get Silly In Trailer For ‘The Lego Movie’ [Video]

LegoMovie

From the looks of it, The LEGO Movie tells the classic hero's journey story. An ordinary guy finds himself in extraordinary circumstances, and he rises to them.

There are just a couple twists on that: First, he's a LEGO man. Second, he is routinely assisted by Batman (and Wonder Woman, and Superman, and maybe Abraham Lincoln, though he seems to be on the fence). Check out the brand-new trailer for the movie after the jump.
