Comics Alliance Gift Guide: What to Buy Someone Who Loves Coffee Shop AU Stories

042815-fb-gudetama1

Warm up your body and soul this season with a steaming hot mug of feelings and coffee. Stories like the fabled "coffee shop AUs (alternate universes)," where licensed characters are imagined in low-key, romantic settings, have been derided by some as lacking drama or conflict, and to that I say: thank god. We don't need to fantasize about conflict or drama in all our fiction when we can just greet what's waiting on our front door. Sometimes, the soul just needs kindling. Share the gifts of feeling and warmth with this coffee shop AU gift guide.

Comics Alliance Gift Guide: Comics To Buy Your Mom (To Show Her What the Fuss is About)

bombshells-feat

Picture it: your sitting by the fire, flipping through an old issue of Sandman, and your mother audibly sighs. "Why do you still read that junk?" You sit and think for a second. Despite the fact that approximately all of the movies coming out are based on comics, you still can't get your mom to understand why you love these funny books.

Until now. This holiday season, give your mom a gift that'll teach her the love of comics.

Comics Alliance Gift Guide: What To Buy For A Queer Comics Fan

qr_featured

These last couple years have felt like a pretty great time to be a queer comics fan. LGBTQ themes in comics have moved from the fringe to (almost?) the mainstream, but that doesn't mean the fringe has stopped doing great things too. Whether you love superheroes, fantasy, drama, or slice of life stories, there's almost certainly a queer comic out there that's perfect for you, or your friend or partner!

The DC Bombshells may have started as nothing more than a fun twist on nostalgia and the DC Universe, but over the past five years the line has evolved into something much larger. Since the first Bombshells statue arrived, the fan following has continued to grow exponentially, and DC Comics and DC Collectibles have expanded the reach and realm quite a bit. Now the Bombshells aren't just collectibles --- though there are still plenty of those --- they're also the stars of an acclaimed comic series.

This week, DC Comics and DC Collectibles will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Bombshells with the release of The Art of DC Comics Bombshells, a hardcover collection of process art for the statues, variant covers, and comic. And following next month, DC Collectibles will release Bumblebee as the 19th statue in the Bombshells series. We got an advanced look at both, and fans of the Bombshells line won't be disappointed in either.

I’m With Heroes: Seven Great Comics About Women Defeating Monsters

Art by Ant Lucia. DC Comics.
Art by Ant Lucia. DC Comics.

The brave hero. The wicked villain. These archetypes, and the tales of their struggles, lie at the heart of the comic book medium, providing the basis for many of our favorite stories. While some may scoff at these aspirational stories, we know that they can be empowering, uplifting, and even inspiring. That's often especially true when the hero at the heart of the story is a woman.

When women slay monsters, the stories are never just about protecting the kingdom and preserving the status quo. When women slay monsters, they challenge their own oppression, they overturn expectations, and they seize control of the future. When women slay monsters, they change the world. These are some of our favorite comic book stories that celebrate that idea.

Vixen Joins The DC Bombshells As A Jazz Singer [SDCC 2016]

vixen-bombshells-feat

DC superhero Vixen has been receviving a long overdue push in the last couple of years, led by CW Seed's animated Vixen series, a guest appearance on Arrow, and an upcoming role for a version of the character in Legends of Tomorrow. Yet for all her TV appearances, DC's best known black female hero hasn't had the same sort of support in comics. That may finally change with the news that Vixen will feature in the next arc of the digital first series DC Comics Bombshells.

DC Collectibles Brings Out the Bombshells [SDCC 2016]

Wonder Woman Flim Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman Statue

Despite the successes of the statue series, I don't think anyone expected the DC Bombshells to get an action figure line. That was clearly the biggest reveal of DC Collectibles' San Diego Comic-Con pre-show event though, and making the fan-favorite characters more affordable and easier to display than their resin counterparts is a smart move. And who could be upset with the reveal of the Superman: The Animated Series two-pack? Not us. It's a surprisingly light SDCC for DC Collectibles this year. Many of the items on display had been seen in some form or another before, but what was was new was certainly exciting.

The 50th chapter of DC Comics Bombshells is out tomorrow, and it's an exciting one.
