Five years ago, Daybreak Games (nee Sony Online Entertainment) unleashed the first official comic book massively multiplayer online game on the world, and the DC universe was never the same. Originally released only on PlayStation 3 and PC, and later revamped for PlayStation 4, DC Universe Online has been chugging along steadily on those platforms ever since. While you couldn't actually play as the marquee heroes or villains of the DC canon, the game's story introduced the idea of nanomachines that gave normal people powers across the globe. That's where you came in.
In DCU Online, you could create your own character with powers reminiscent of your favorite comic characters to battle alongside heroes and villains like Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor against the main big bad, Brainiac, to prevent a terrible future from befalling the planet. Along the way, you'd encounter other famous DC faces, and battle across cities like Metropolis and Gotham before exploring the further reaches of the DCU. As a former player from the PS3 launch, I can attest to how fun and addictive it was to live vicariously in the DC Universe through my handful of characters. I've been away from the game for a long time, but as part of Daybreak's new multiplatform mentality since breaking away from SOE, DC Universe Online is finally coming to Xbox One and it might just be time for me to suit up once more.
After a few months of teases, DC Universe Online has illuminated its plans for new content in the coming year. A "War of the Light" DLC trilogy is set to kick off in early 2014 with a debut entry centering around Red Lantern-ly rage.
Trigon and his seven-deadly-sinning spawn have officially begun tearing it up in the newly launched DC Universe Online DLC pack. Appropriately titled "Sons of Trigon," the new DLC sees heroic players team with Wonder Woman, the Teen Titans and magical characters like Zatanna and John Constantine in a nightmarish version of Gotham City to battle Circe, Trigon's kiddos and villainous players over the fate of reality. If the good guys win, Trigon stays banished. If Circe and company win, Trigon, his antlers and all four of his freaky demon eyes get to, I dunno, eat everyone in the DCU's children? I dunno. I'm sure they'd do something like that. The new DLC also includes the new healing-focused Celestial Power, Legends PvP characters Donna Troy and Cheetah, Brother Blood and Raven themed PvE gear, new feats and collections and other demon-y jazz. You can check out the new "Sons of Trigon" launch trailer and images after the jump.
