FOX’s Gotham has only expanded as we approach the Season 2 premiere, adding more regulars and Batty villains than we can count, but may finally have stumbled over its own size. Two more of Gotham’s finest won’t return for Season 2 as series regulars, while a new international trailer spotlights lunatics running Arkham Asylum this time out.
Gotham gave out a few tidbits of Season 2 from its Comic-Con 2015 panel, though only those in attendance got to see new footage. Now, the DC drama goes batty with villains in two new trailers for the fall premiere, including a new look at the Batcave, and the so-called “Rise of the Villains.”
FOX’s Gotham proved somewhat light on announcements at Comic-Con 2015, the only major casting since a questionable love interest for Bruce, but now the GCPD has a major new Shield on the force. Hot off the Freak Show, Vick Mack - er, Michael Chiklis will clean up Gotham city streets as a Season 2 Regular.
Whatever your feelings on FOX’s Gotham, the Bat-prequel drama certainly crammed in a number of recognizable Dark Knight names, occasionally in tyke form. That trend looks to continue in Season 2, as Gotham adds a Goldbergs star as young Master Bruce’s new “love interest,” Silver St. Cloud.
There was a whole lot of wishy-washy nonsense surrounding Cameron Monaghan’s role as Jerome in Gotham Season 1. Was he FOX’s Bat-prequel version of the Joker or wasn’t he? Executive producer Bruno Heller teased the arrival of Batman’s most famous villain in Season 1, but backtracked later to say we would see a “pre-embryonic” origin story of the character in Season 2. But according to a photo posted by Monaghan, we may have been misled — or not. I don’t know. This is getting out of hand.
Bane of TV existence though FOX’s Gotham may be, Season 2 has set some strong talent to precipitate Bruce Wayne’s batty origins. Following the addition of one major big bad, Gotham Season 2 has cast both Jessica Lucas in the role of DC’s Tigress, as well as The Goldbergs star Dustin Ybarra in a recurring role as a hungry new villain.
FOX’s Gotham has thus far focused on elevating its existing cast to Season 2 regulars, but with Jada Pinkett’s Fish Mooney out of the picture, Batman’s hometown needs a new villain, or two. Enter the ubiquitous James Frain as both savior and big bad to Gotham Season 2, as well as the brother of DC villain Tigress.
Marvel may be sitting out Comic-Con 2015 (at least on the movies side) but good grief if DC isn’t pumping everything they have into San Diego this year, big screen and small. Warner Bros. TV has set a whopping 18 shows to have a presence at Comic-Con, including another “Superhero Saturday Night” for the likes of Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and more.
Of the many Batman characters paraded through Gotham’s first FOX season, few proved so perfunctory as a Harvey Dent three times Bruce’s age and with anger issues already in place. Well, good news, Gotham fan! Nicholas D’Agosto will flip coins and double-pun through Season 2 as a series regular.
FOX’s Gotham lay plenty of groundwork in Season 1 for Batman’s beginning (like, way too much in fact), but its first major Season 2 change proves a welcome one. Not only will Morena Baccarin reprise her role as future Bat-ally Dr. Leslie Thompkins, she’ll even stick around as a series regular.
