Jeremy Renner Really Wanted Hawkeye to Die in ‘The Avengers’

Marvel
Marvel

The general consensus among most Marvel fans is that Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is the worst part of the first Avengers movie. It’s not that Renner is particularly bad in the role, per se — he just doesn’t have anything to do, and you needn’t look any further than Hawkeye’s great arc in Age of Ultron for proof of how terribly underutilized he was in that first Avengers outing. As it turns out, Renner himself is painfully aware of this fact — so much so that he went to great lengths to try and get Hawkeye killed off in The Avengers.

‘Avengers’ Star Jeremy Renner Likes Working, Would Star In A Hawkeye Netflix Series

Marvel
Marvel

Up until Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye didn’t have a whole lot to do in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making him something of an extraneous character. It’s unclear just how much of a part Hawkeye will have in Captain America: Civil War given the crowded slate of characters, but there is one place where Renner’s hero could take the spotlight: Netflix. Although Marvel currently has no plans to give their MCU stars a spinoff series, Renner says he’d be game to take Hawkeye to the small screen.

Marvel
Marvel

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part I hitting theaters within a year of one another, it seemed likely that we might see at least some of the Guardians gang appear alongside the Avengers team. According to Jeremy Renner, you shouldn't hold your breath for that crossover — in fact, it may never happen.

The superheroes at the center of Avengers: Age of Ultron resonate so strongly with so many people because they’re so deeply entrenched in popular culture. Captain America, Iron Man and the Hulk were around for years before Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo were even born. These aren’t just characters – they’re icons. And while serious comic book nerds know how much Earth’s mightiest heroes have changed with the times, taking a look back at what the likes of Black Widow and Hawkeye and the Vision used to look like is both entertaining and (dare we say it?) educational.

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ PR: Now with Slut-Shaming and Rape Jokes!

Marvel
Marvel

By now, it's the "slut" heard 'round the geek world: during their press tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron, actors Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans referred to Black Widow respectively as a "slut" and a "whore." They've since apologized - well, Evans apologized, Renner offered something else. Plus, a new clip from the movie reveals a rape joke - something proud feminist Joss Whedon should know better than doing. But is the fuss about these things worthwhile?

Well, yes. Words have meaning. And the words chosen by Renner, Evans, and Whedon in these situations happen to be words that demean women. When Black Widow is routinely left off of Age of Ultron merchandise, the fact that major players in the movie chose these words is extra uncomfortable.
