Report: CBS ‘Star Trek’ Series Returning to Original Franchise Continuity

CBS Star Trek Details Original Continuity

Among the many questions raised by CBS’ announcement of a new All-Access streaming Star Trek for 2017 under Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, fans had to wonder if a TV return would follow the J.J. Abrams reboot films, return to the original timeline, or perhaps exist independent of both. Now, reports suggest that not only is the original continuity back in play, we know which Star Trek properties the new CBS iteration will fall between.

One:12 Collective Spock is a Wonderful Testament to the Sci-Fi Icon

Mezco One:12 Collective Star Trek Mr. Spock

Late last year, Mezco revealed the Star Trek license would be part of its One:12 Collective series, beginning with the most memorable science officer in fiction, Mr. Spock. Though not due to arrive on shelves until later this spring, Mezco surprised us with a pre-release version at Toy Fair earlier this month. Though it doesn't come with all the accessories, the Spock we got was the final figure version, which gives a strong enough idea of what to expect from the complete release. As we'd expected from the production photos shared in December, the One:12 Collective Mr. Spock is another fine entry into what is quickly becoming Mezco's signature figure line.

Out of the box, this pre-release Spock includes the base figure, the posing stand and a Starfeet insignia base matching Spock's rank. The retail version will come with an alternate head, multiple alternate hands, a phaser, tricorder and communicator. Kudos to Mezco for thinking to include the "Live long and prosper" salute hand in this version though. The simple hands would have been fine, but at least now we can honor the man the way he should be remembered forever--as a kind, smart man who wanted nothing but peace and prosperity for all life.

First off, Hannibal and American Gods showrunner Bryan Fuller will return to his Star Trek past to topline the new series!

Mezco Makes it So for Sulu in the Star Trek One:12 Collective

While the world waits for more on Mezco's One:12 Collective superheroes, the company is steadily dropping new Star Trek characters to hold the fort. Not that we're complaining. For too long Star Trek's original cast has been relegated to some fairly unremarkable figures. The One:12 Collective has been a solid gold hit for Mezco since it started last year, and its latest additions should keep it trending upwards.

Joining Spock this year will be Hikaru Sulu, the fencing expert and senior helmsman of the original USS Enterprise. Since debuting in the '60s, Sulu went on to become an accomplished member of Starfleet in his own right, eventually captaining the USS Excelsior. As great as it was to see Sulu get proper accolades, he's most fondly remembered for his appearances on the original show, where George Takei made the Japanese physicist such an icon of science fiction. It's also the version Mezco is hoping to celebrate with its upcoming figure.

Logic Prevails With Mezco’s One:12 Collective Mr. Spock

Though to this point Mezco's One:12 Collective has been limited to comic heroes, the company had teased some classic movie and television characters would join the line eventually. The wait won't be much longer for the first figure based on a real person. This spring, Mezco's One:12 Collective adds Star Trek to its roster starting with the smartest man in Starfleet. Well, at least maybe the smartest man on the USS Enterprise.

Yes, that's right; Mr. Spock, the first officer of Starfleet's flagship starship, will be getting his very own 1/12 scale figure to fit in alongside the likes of Batman and Judge Dredd (and eventually Frankenstein and Space Ghost). Even though there's a new movie on the way, Mezco's figure is steeped in nostalgia, and brings us original series' incarnation of the fan-favorite character as portrayed by Leonard Nimoy. That's okay with us though. Old school Spock rules.

Mega Bloks Travels the Galaxy and the Sewers With Star Trek and TMNT

Star Trek Mega Bloks USS Enterprise

During New York Comic Con, two all-new licenses were unveiled for the very first time by Mega Bloks. The block-building sets the company already offers run the gamut from Halo to Skylanders to Assassin's Creed and beyond, but the latest additions to the company's portfolio have long deserved their chance to shine in construction set form. Though we'd known Mega Bloks had the Star Trek and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles licenses, no one had seen much of what the company had planned. Though no official TMNT sets were shown off, we did get to see the first figures across the three different series Mega Bloks is producing. There were plenty of Star Trek figures too, but the actual sets were what really caught our attention.

There are going to be plenty of sets released in 2016 and beyond, but at NYCC, Mega Bloks had three different kits for Star Trek on hand. Two comprised of ships, the very impressive classic USS Enterprise and the Klingon Battlecruiser, and the third was a transporter room set. All three looked impressive even in these early stages, but the scaled down Enterprise is definitely the star of the line. Or rather, it is for now without a bridge set on the horizon. One expects it can't be too far behind considering there's a transporter room already.

Mezco Bringing More DC Heroes, Star Trek to One:12 Collective

Mezco's One:12 Collective at SDCC

Mezco's One:12 Collective hasn't been around very long (just one released figure, and one shipping soon), but it's already made a major impression on collectors. Featuring incredible articulation, real fabric costumes and a wealth of accessories, Mezco has seemingly brought the same kind of quality and experience you'd expect from larger, more elaborate (read: expensive) collectibles to an affordable scale that fits in with most other figure lines.

As the first entry in the brand, the Dark Knight Returns Batman may have set an impossible bar for Mezco to meet again, but that doesn't mean the company isn't trying. At San Diego Comic-Con this year, Mezco revealed a partial upcoming slate of figures it has planned for 2016, including more DC heroes, and some interesting surprises. Though only in prototype form, the pieces look to continue what Mezco started, and evolve the One:12 Collective into more than just a flash in the pan.
