‘Daredevil’ Star Charlie Cox Talks Season 2, Black Widow, Bullseye and The Punisher
Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight has previously spoken of his interest in a second Netflix season, though the Marvel drama has since revealed its renewal plans without DeKnight at the helm. Now, series star Charlie Cox has his own thoughts on where Daredevil Season 2 might go, including Defenders ties, Avengers crossover, and even The Punisher.
Granted, Cox can only speak from the vantage of his leading role, but a post-renewal interview with Empire yielded some surprising insight into which MCU characters could potentially appear in a second season. Not only that, but Cox reveals that Daredevil Season 2 will likely stream in the same April window for 2016, alongside either Luke Cage or Iron Fist, which could potentially put The Defenders as early as late 2016.
I have to be careful because we just got commissioned so I have no idea who is going to turn up. Based on the show we’ve created, which is very grounded in reality, I’d like to see Punisher maybe show up, a little bit of Elektra maybe. I wouldn’t mind Black Widow making an appearance, and you can’t think about Daredevil for too long without thinking of Bullseye.
We’ll begin shooting in the second half of the year. It’ll be the same timeline as the last show, so season two will come out about this time next year. Again, I’m imagining all this, but they’ll probably do Iron Fist or Luke Cage at the same time, followed by the other one [of the two] in the first half of 2016 and then maybe Defenders in the second half of 2016 or the beginning of 2017.
As to the second season, now to be showrun by Season 1 writers Doug Petrie (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Marco Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy), Cox also offered up a vision (heh) of how Matt Murdock might change in Season 2. “What’s exciting is to have a season where [Matt Murdock] is really embodying his alter-ego before we get to the Defenders.”
AKA Jessica Jones has already gone deep into production for a projected late 2015 release, while Luke Cage has set Cheo Hodari Coker as its own showrunner, but will Daredevil Season 2 get to work assembling its heroes and villains before long? Might we see one of the movie characters dropping in, or will The Defenders take us by surprise in (maybe) 2016?
