For folks who have long lamented former indy publisher and cartoonist extraordinaire Steve Bissette's escape from the mainstream comics industry for other ventures -- among them teaching art students at the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vt., and doing lots of writing -- you'll be thrilled to know the former Tyrant muse is back in the game... sort of.

Blur, from Black Coat Press, represents the first of four volumes collecting Bissette's weekly writings on film over the past decade, a real treat especially if you love horror films, both the good and God awful ones, from the viewpoint of an expert.

And, if you're a connoisseur of Bissette's brilliant art, particularly his classic work with John Totleben, Rick Veitch and Alan Moore on Swamp Thing, you'll love the Blur series for the covers alone. Each volume features elements from A Year in Fear, the calendar Bissette and Mike Dobbs created for Tundra 15 years ago. I still have mine, a gift from my late best friend, stashed away from society for safe keeping and a rainy day.
