Marvel TV Eyes Squirrel Girl-Centric ‘New Warriors’ Live-Action Comedy
Lest you think Marvel’s branch-out into Hulu for a Runaways series was unusual enough, things are about to get even more squirrel-ly. Not only is a New Warriors comedy series officially in development, but fan-favorite Squirrel Girl might take center stage on the live-action project.
TVLine reported the news, which follows a myriad of unidentified Marvel projects and comedies said to be in development in recent years. The half-hour project is currently being shopped to cable and streaming (despite the involvement of ABC Studios), and described as “the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers, one of whom would include Doreen Green (aka Squirrel Girl).”
The character of Squirrel Girl (who has far more power than her name would suggest) has become a fan-favorite in recent years, with everyone from Anna Kendrick to Stranger Things‘’ Barb campaigning for the role. In some iterations, the character has even served as a babysitter for Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.
Talks are early for the moment, but could a Squirrel Girl-centric New Warriors really follow Cloak and Dagger and Runaways to take Marvel off Netflix and ABC? Would the series take place in the MCU? Stay tuned for the latest.
