Official ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ Lego Sets to Rule Us All in 2012
Lego has announced plans to release new building sets based on the Warner Bros. cinematic adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, plus WB's two upcoming films based on The Hobbit in 2012. That's right, short of whatever's in The Silmarillion (sorry dudes, TLDR), Lego basically has the right to make everything ever from Middle Earth as presented in Peter Jackson's movies. LoTR sets will roll out beginning in June, with sets based on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey scheduled for release closer to the debut of the film's December 14 opening.
From Lego's official press release:
"Our collaboration with Warner Bros. Consumer Products has delivered numerous worldwide successes in the construction toy aisle with lines like LEGO HARRY POTTER and LEGO BATMAN, introducing us to loyal audiences who love great stories, strong characters and the toys that they inspire," said Jill Wilfert, vice president, licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. "It's particularly exciting to now be able to create sets based on the fantasy worlds and characters from THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and the two films based on THE HOBBIT, not only because we know they will foster collectability and creative play, but also because these are two properties that our fans have been asking us to create for years."
Lego's not kidding about fan demand. Anyone who follows blogs like The Brothers Brick or coverage from the Brick World convention has seen what the bricks are capable of in the hands of LoTR fans. Let's just hope you've saved up enough of Smaug's gold to pick up your own Helm's Deep when the time comes...
