‘Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics’ Documentary Out in November With Ryan Reynolds Narration

Given DC Comics fairly sweeping restructuring as it transitioned into DC Entertainment over the past twelve months, now seems like as good a time as any for Warner Bros. to take a look back on the more than 75-year history of its comic book publishing arm. On November 9, WB will do just that with "Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics," an "all-new documentary that takes viewers behind the scenes of the iconic company with unprecedented access to the Warner Bros. and DC Comics archives" as narrated by upcoming "Green Lantern" star Ryan Reynolds.



Written and directed by Mac Carter (no, not Damaine Radcliff's character from "Step Up"), executive produced by Jeffrey Blitz ("Spellbound") and produced by Gregory Noveck, Ivan Cohen, Sean Welch and Janet Eckholm, the $25ish DVD will reportedly combine excerpts from comics, films and TV series with insights from DC creators. The DVD's official press release names Neal Adams, Karen Berger, Mike Carlin, Dan DiDio, Neil Gaiman, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, Paul Levitz, Dwayne McDuffie, Grant Morrison, Dennis O'Neil, Paul Pope, Louise Simonson, Mark Waid, Len Wein, and Marv Wolfman, so far.

I find the prominence of Dr. Manhattan on the cover pretty interesting considering his analogous nature, his status as a non DCU character and the chasm between Alan Moore and "Watchmen." As much money as the franchise made for Warner Bros., the character's inclusion isn't completely without merit. It just seems like the kind of comic book fans who might pick up this documentary will find his inclusion alongside DC's big three ("Big Five," I suppose, if the GL movies take off and Flash films happen) a little goofy.

Still, the documentary should be an interesting (if potentially controversy-free) look at DC's impact on wider pop culture over three quarters of a century.
