Art Baltazar and Franco continue playing in the DC sandbox in Super Powers #2, with a near defeat for Superman and something mysterious arriving in Central City. You can see how much fun the preeminent kids' comics team is having drawing on a wide selection of DC influences in this exclusive five-page preview!

The opening scene recognizably resembles the climax of the much-maligned film Superman Returns, while Lex Luthor is dressed in an outfit he wore in the climax of Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman. But this time it's Wonder Woman who makes the save; something that I'd frankly like to see more often. It's not that she's stronger than Superman, but she lacks his weaknesses.

The cover prominently features the Composite Superman, who is hopefully in the comic itself, despite not appearing in the preview. I suppose it's possible he's what's materializing in the sky above Central City, although it would be pretty weird for a villain who's half Superman and half Batman to go after the Flash. In any case, we'll find out for sure when Super Powers #2 comes out on December 28.

Here's the official word from DC:

Superman has been defeated by Lex Luthor—or so the evil mastermind thinks! Trapped in a Kryptonite fortress under the sea, our hero is fading fast—but he can’t be defeated when his friends have his back! And while he is recovering, a new Kryptonian arrives on the scene! Plus, something weird has come to Central City. The Flash might provide some answers…if you can keep up!
