Confirmed: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Is Heading To ‘Planet Hulk’ [SDCC 2016]
Thor: Ragnarok is set to be one heck of a film based on the information revealed so far, with a killer cast including Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Cate Blanchett as Hela, and Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster. We've already heard from Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo that the film is going to be a cosmic buddy movie between Thor and The Hulk, and today at San Diego Comic Con we received more information about what that might mean as Marvel unveiled a very familiar set of armor for the Jade Giant.
In a post on Twitter, Marvel's Agent M unveiled the Gladiator Hulk armor made famous in Greg Pak and Carlo Pagulayan's insta-classic "Planet Hulk" storyline. In the original story, The Illuminati (Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Black Bolt and Doctor Strange) decided to send The Hulk off to space where he could live out his days on an idyllic and uninhibited planet.
Unfortunately, The Hulk's spaceship was sucked into a wormhole and he crash landed on war-torn Sakaar, where he was forced by The Red King into gladitorial combat against similarly powerful foes --- including the Silver Surfer --- before rising up and becoming king of the world.
While we're unlikely to see a cinematic Illuminati, it seems very likely that Thor: Ragnarok will see Goldblum's Grandmaster abducting The Hulk and forcing him to fight Thor in one of his famous contests, as he is wont to do in the comics --- often against his brother The Collector, played by Benicio Del Toro in Guardians of the Galaxy. We already know that Sakaar exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as its people were used as grunt soldiers by Ronan The Accuser in Guardians.
Interestingly, in the animated adaptation of the storyline, The Hulk did not fight the Silver Surfer, and instead fought Thor's ally Beta Ray Bill. While we don't necessarily expect Bill to show up in the film, it would be the coolest thing to ever happen.
Thor: Raganarok is due in theaters November 3rd. More Marvel movie news is expected later today at the Hall H panel at 05:30pm.
