Marvel’s animated Guardians of the Galaxy have given us a chance to catch up with the adventures of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot before its cinematic inspiration arrives for Volume 2 in 2017, and the TV branch will reach another milestone before the film. Disney XD’s Guardians will return for a second season, and crossover with The Avengers as well.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Marvel confirmed a second season of the animated Guardians of the Galaxy to premiere in 2017, while the current season continues Saturday nights on Disney XD. And while we’ve seen animated iterations of the Guardians and Avengers sharing the screen before, here’s what the new season has to offer:

Season 2 will find the Guardians teaming up with The Avengers to stop an evil alien scientist named The High Evolutionary. Our heroes will also discover an ancient weapon with mysterious powers capable of destroying them and everything they’ve sworn to protect.

Says Disney XD of the renewal:

We’re pleased to give fans a new season of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, taking them deeper into the Guardians’ universe. The team at Marvel Animation continues to deliver great stories that capture the tone and spirit of the feature film and provide entirely new chapters to the Guardians of the Galaxy story.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features Will Friedle as Star-Lord, David Sobolov as Drax, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot and Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, and James Arnold Taylor as both Yondu and Cosmo.
