Just last month, Brad Bird revealed that he is finally (finally!) working on a screenplay for a sequel to Pixar’s The Incredibles — of all the Pixar properties, fans have wanted a sequel to this one the most. And now we’re finally getting one. It may still be a while, given Pixar’s production time, but Bird has confirmed that the sequel to his animated superhero hit is very likely his next project.

In an interview with Collider to promote Tomorrowland, the director was asked for an update on the status of The Incredibles 2 script, and Bird sounded really confident about his ideas:

Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages. I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.

When asked if The Incredibles 2 would be his next film, Bird responded, “Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah.”

Bird has delivered some of the very best animated films, from his debut with The Iron Giant to the somewhat under-appreciated Ratatouille, and — of course — The Incredibles. He’s also proven himself as a gifted live-action filmmaker with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and his new live-action film, Tomorrowland, hits theaters on May 22.
