There Is Going To Be A ‘Jem And The Holograms’ Movie And They Are Casting It On Tumblr

Jem (Jerrica Benton) on the cover of Glitter Magazine

Am I awake right now? Is this whole world a just beautiful dream? Because folks, it is rare that news comes across the desk here at ComicsAlliance that literally brings me to tears of joy, and today, that has happened. I am openly weeping at my desk, because it has just been announced that there will be a Jem and the Holograms live-action feature film from G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu. The beauty of the man who brought us last year’s greatest cliff-side ninja fighting turning his attention to the glamour, glitter, fashion and fame ofJem is overwhelming.

The film is still in its extremely early stages of production, though, and has yet to be cast. In fact, Chu, along with Jason Blum and Scooter Braun are looking to cast the Holograms by having fans submit videos of themselves via Tumblr. And now you know why I wasn’t sure if this was a dream. Check out the video announcement below!

For those of you who may not be aware, Jem and the Holograms was a toy cartoon produced in the ’80s by Hasbro, around the same time as G.I. Joe, Transformers and Inhumanoids, all of which exist in the same bizarre animated continuity. Created by Christy Marx, Jem is focused on Jerrica Benton, the daughter of a record executive and technologist who mainly spends her time running an orphanage until her father dies, leaving her a supercomputer named Synergy and a pair of earrings that allow her to project 100 percent realistic holograms. Naturally, she uses these powers to become a glamorous, pink-haired rockstar named Jem start a band to raise money for the orphans, and immediately becomes the biggest star in the world while feuding with her rival band, The Misfits (their songs are better). Over the course of three truly outrageous seasons, Jem and her band, the Holograms get into a various adventures that involve time travel, volcano murder, and the two biggest rock stars in the world racing against each other at the Indy 500.

It is one of my favorite things in the entire world.

Having previously directed G.I. Joe: Retaliation, his work on a Jem and the Holograms movie would mean that Jon M. Chu is potentially the only person alive who has worked with The Rock, the RZA and Jem, meaning that he is living my ideal life. But it also means that we will almost certainly be getting new Jem toys that will not be $300 high-end collectibles. The news about the open casting call via Tumblr seems a little weird, sure, but don’t forget — that’s exactly how the Holograms themselves found their new drummer, Raya, at the start of Season 2! (This is also when the Misfits decided to add a saxophone player to a band that had no drummer. Their songs were still better.)

The announcement was made via JemTheMovie.com. Rest assured that ComicsAlliance will be covering this story as it develops.
