Jonathan Hickman’s creator owned work is known for tackling big, often metaphysical concepts such as the nature of media as propaganda, the transcendence of humanity beyond the limitations of the human form and the death and destruction of the entire world at the hands of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

His new series The Black Monday Murders with Tomm Coker, Michael Garland and Rus Wooton, announced today at Image Expo, takes things a bit simpler and is all about rival schools of magic, but instead of magic they are financial institutions battling for supremacy following the global stock market crash of the late eighties.

In an interview with IGN, Hickman and Coker described that the series is set in the aftermath of the real-life stock market crash of 1987, or Black Monday, and at the live announcement Hickman explained that "This is a book about schools of magic. The only difference being that instead of schools of magic, it's financial institutions. Power is accumulated through wealth. It's about a bunch of guys, a bunch of schools, that gathered together and generated a financial collapse in order to attain power."

Hickman praised Coker’s art on the series, calling his work “amazing” and noting that the book will be “good for him.” He seemed to understand that the premise might be initially a bit hard to grasped but promised "You won't totally get it until the book is out there... but it's probably the best thing I've done in years."

Hickman also spoke about the design of the comic, saying, “This represents probably the first book that I've done where I feel like it's a good manifestation of how a comic should be done” and promising that it will be bigger than regular comics and packed with the charts and dossiers that have come to be expected with his work.
