The rumors were true, you guys. Marvel vs. Capcom is indeed getting a new sequel, this time eschewing the number system in favor the title Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. The first teaser trailer for the latest in the ongoing collision of universes brought back familiar faces Ryu, Mega Man and Iron Man, but more importantly, it introduced Captain Marvel to the series for the first time in its history. I don't know about you, but I'm already throwing money at my screen.

Now it should be noted, it's not just Mega Man appearing in this game, but Mega Man X, which is technically a new character for the series as well, but for all intents and purposes Mega Man has been well represented in the series in the past. Getting a major hero like Captain Marvel is a big deal, and bodes well for the kind of characters we might be seeing join in on the action from the Marvel side this time around (cough Kamala Khan cough).

You might notice the name isn't just a clever play on the Infinity Gems of the Marvel Universe, as the Infinity Gems themselves will return to the series for the first time since Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems. The power, space, time, reality, soul, and mind gems will all be included and offer players another level of strategy when building their 2v2 teams. That's a slight departure from previous entries, which formerly featured 3v3 combat, but one that is certainly not unwelcome.

There's not any actual gameplay footage in the trailer, so we don't know exactly how Marvel vs Capcom Infinite will play just yet. However, the first official gameplay footage will debut during the finale of the Capcom Cup on Sunday night, which will be airing on ESPN.

If you can't wait that long, PlayStation has also announced Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is available right now on PlayStation 4 exclusively. Marvel vs Capcom Infinite will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam when it arrives in 2017.
