The Ant-Man Menace: Why Michael Douglas Makes Me Nervous About Marvel Movies [Opinion]

Marvel Studios unveiled surely its strangest casting decision to date this week when it announced that Michael Douglas will play the role of Hank Pym in 2015's Ant-Man movie. Marvel also confirmed that the already announced Paul Rudd will take the role of Scott Lang, the second man to don the Ant-Man helmet.

The announcement was a surprise that elicited a Batfleck-esque response from some of the intended audience - myself included. Something about Douglas-as-Pym didn't sit right with me. Was this an irrational reflex, or is there a reason this casting set alarm bells ringing?

Last month news broke that Paul Rudd would be starring in Ant-Man, the upcoming Marvel film featuring the diminutive Avenger. When it was confirmed that Rudd would be playing Ant-Man, the question of which Ant-Man arose. And while the assumption by many was that Rudd would play Hank Pym, the first character to use that title, it has now been revealed that role will be portrayed by award-winning actor Michael Douglas, with Rudd playing the second Ant-Man, Scott Lang.

Following months of rumors, Variety and The Wrap are reporting that Paul Rudd is in negotiations to star in Marvel's Ant-Man movie. Directed by Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), with a script by he and Joe Cornish, the film is set for a July 31, 2015 release. As usual, Kevin Feige is producing. Which Ant-Man?
