The Influence Of Alex Toth On Chris Samnee’s ‘Black Widow’

Cover

Chris Samnee is one of the best artists working in comics today. His stock has risen steadily since 2010 as he went from Thor: The Mighty Avenger to The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom, to a long, esteemed run with Mark Waid on Daredevil, winning both a Harvey and an Eisner award along the way.

Now on Black Widow, again with Waid, he continues to develop his craft and turn heads, so much so that "one of the best artists working in comics today" doesn't seem to describe just how good he actually is. One of the reasons he's so good is that he's picked up tricks from some of the greatest artists to come before him, and one in particular stands above the rest: Alex Toth.

Darth_Vader_featured

Darth Vader, by Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca, is coming to an end with issue #25. To mark the occasion, Marvel is releasing the issue with 12 different covers.

The main cover is by Juan Gimenez, and looks like it could be the poster for a Darth Vader movie. Adi Granov offers a similarly cinematic cover, which also features Doctor Aphra, BT-1, and 0-0-0, the supporting cast of the series. They appear on a few of the other covers, while the rest focus on the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

The Chase Is On In Waid, Samnee & Wilson’s ‘Black Widow’ #1 [Review]

Black-Widow-Header

Last year, Mark Waid, Chris Samnee and Matthew Wilson wrapped up their defining run on Daredevil, a run that stands proudly shoulder-to-shoulder with the runs of Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis/Alex Maleev and Ed Brubaker/Michael Lark. Now, they’ve teamed up again to deliver a brand new Black Widow ongoing that explodes at you right from the first page and keeps you hooked every step of the way until the end.

Waid and Samnee Pit Natasha Against SHIELD in ‘Black Widow’ #1

bw_featured

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee's run on Daredevil is already the stuff of legends, and it only ended last year. Now they're ready to make more comics magic with a run on Black Widow that starts March 2nd.

The preview pages show Natasha in a knockdown drag-out with what seems to be the entirety of SHIELD, and as a reader who's never bought that a super-secretive espionage organization can be heroic or trustworthy, that makes me pretty excited to read the book. Not that this creative team isn't enough to warrant plenty of excitement.
