It was announced recently, on this very site, that I'll be co-writing, with John Barber, and drawing Transformers vs. G.I. Joe series for IDW. While my car was being inspected, I stopped at a nearby comics shop and bought $70 worth of dollar back issues of Larry Hama's Marvel G.I. Joe comic. It's since become one of my all-time favorite comics. I wish I would've read these sooner, but I'm kind of glad I didn't because now I can enjoy them for the first time.
Fresh from constructing Mega Man toys using Kenner's classic 3.75" tall Star Wars figures, action figure customizer Dan Polydoris is back on the scene with a line honoring the Activision games of the Atari Era using classic G.I. Joe figures. That's right, Polydoris has fashioned the protagonists from Pressure Cooker, Keystone Kapers, Pitfall!, H.E.R.O. and Frostbite into toys from Real American Heroes.
At this point, Transformers and G.I. Joe have crossed over so many times that it takes something pretty special to get our attention, and today, IDW did exactly that with the announcement that the latest Transformers/G.I. Joe series will be drawn and co-written by the amazing Tom Scioli.
Seriously, whoever used one of their magic lamp wishes to make this happen, everyone here at ComicsAlliance sincerely thanks you. Check out the full cover, in which Scioli draws Destro and a few other, less important characters, below.
Fans of real American heroes will have plenty of convention exclusive options in the near future form Hot Toys. The toymaker has announced new 1/6 scale versions of Superman III's evil (drunk!) Superman, Captain America: The First Avenger's "star spangled" war-bond promoting Cap and G.I. Joe: Retaliation's version of Joseph Colton.
As the home of an abundant assortment of licensed titles -- many of which popularized at one time or another in animation -- IDW's in a pretty good place to play up its ties to Saturday morning cartoons. This September, the publisher will play up this relationship in titles with direct ties to animation like Black Dynamite, Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, G.I. Joe A Real American Hero, Popeye Classics, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles New Animated Adventures and Transformers: More than Meets The Eye, but also Danger Girl, Judge Dredd, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and... The X-Files? Hit the jump to see September's full line of "IDW Gets Animated" alternate covers.
