Captain America The Winter Soldier The Official Game
Gameloft

Riding the shield-slinging Captain America: The Winter Soldier promotional blitz that kicked off on Sunday, Gameloft has released its first trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier: The Official Game. Headed to iOS, Android and Windows 8 mobile devices on April 4 -- the same day the movie opens -- the new game promises "an original blend of combat action and flexible tactical options." The trailer is more straightforward, though, and simply shows Captain America smashing faces.

Halftone 2 Turns Photos And More Into Comic Book Stories On iOS

Halftone 2 Main

There have been a number of photo-to-comic apps on the iPad over the years, but the $1.99 Halftone 2 Comic Book Creator (a sequel to the first $0.99 Halftone app released in 2011) may be the first one that's nimble enough to make the process anything more than a time-killer. While it's marketed principally as a fun novelty, it's got an easy-to-use radial menu and other intuitive tools for topping photos and other images -- like, say, your drawings -- with all the lettering, sound effects and other visual add-ons native to sequential art.

DC’s ‘Batman: Arkham Origins’ MultiVerse Graphic Novel App: Choosing The Wrong Adventure

BATMAN- ARKHAM ORIGINS - A DC Comics MultiVerse Graphic Novel
DC Comics

Yesterday DC Comics launched its new Batman: Arkham Origins - A DC Comics MultiVerse Graphic Novel app, which serves as a choose-your-own-adventure style motion comic prequel to WB Games Montreal's video game of the same name. Befitting of its status as a video game tie-in, this is a "freemium" experience. You download a free 8-page setup before reaching a fork in the narrative road and pay more (it's being serialized, you see) for the full range of story content as it's released. As a bonus, readers who pay to read halfway through the story get a code to unlock a new playable skin in the Origins game. Those who pay for a season pass get the first skin, plus an additional costume for Batman to wear.

In an interview with Wired, Hank Kanalz, SVP of Integrated Publishing at DC Comics, characterized the effort as an experiment. Financially, this model could prove to be a success -- especially with its downloadable content (DLC) incentives for hardcore gamers. Creatively? So far it leaves something to be desired.

Framed video game
Loveshack Entertainment

A lot of video games have adapted comics and comic book characters. At least one has even given players the opportunity to jump around between panels, but has there ever been a video game that actually used comic panels as a core gameplay mechanic?

FiftyThree Introduces ‘Pencil’ iPad Stylus For ‘Paper’ App

FiftyThree Pencil Stylus
FiftyThree

As an increasing number of precision pressure-sensitive capacitive pens and corresponding applications arrive for iOS, iPad users are faced with a lot of considerations... now including whether or not to splurge for walnut wood. While it doesn't sport pressure-sensitivity, FiftyThree's new Pencil stylus, designed to work the Paper app, does showcase a few unique features that casual (or even more serious) iPad artists may be into.

Thor The Dark World The Official Game
Gameloft

For fans who can't wait until November 8 to see Thor chuck his mystical mallet at bad guys spanning the nine realms in theaters, Gameloft's Thor: The Dark World - The Official Game may just sate the ol' Midgardian appetite for Mjolnir-izing. Now available for free on iOS and Android devices, the new action title approximates the events of the Thor: The Dark World movie in a battle against Malekith the Dark Elf and his evil forces, who are seemingly *snort* Hel-bent on destroying every brach of Yggdrasil.

Marvel Creativity Studio App Stylus
Disney Consumer Products/Marvel Entertainment

There are a lot of great stylus and app pairing options for illustrating on the iPad, but only one can teach you how to draw Iron Man's head. Yesterday Marvel launched its free Marvel Creativity Studio app, along with an optional accompanying sold-separately stylus. Part coloring book, part sketchbook, part tutorial, part animation software, and part sticker book, the Creativity Studio is meant to give young Marvel fans the tools to create content not unlike that of Avengers Assemble, Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

‘Batman: Arkham Origins’ For iOS Is Repetitive, Until It Becomes A Money Grab [Review]

ArkhamiOS

There's a great old gag from The Simpsons in which Homer, who's trying out to be a member of the secret society the Stonecutters, is going through an initiation ceremony that involves him getting hit in the butt with paddles over and over. The members of the group keep doing the same thing to him, but they call it different names, like "Crossing the Desert" and "The Unblinking Eye."

That's what playing Batman: Arkham Origins for iOS is like.

‘DuckTales: Scrooge’s Loot’ Video Game Arrives On iOS And Android [Video]

DuckTales: Scrooge's Loot Video Game
Disney

It looks like Capcom's recently released DuckTales Remastered isn't the only game in town when it comes to adventuring with Uncle Scrooge and Launchpad. Disney has rolled out an all-new and all-different kind of game featuring Duckburg's wealthiest resident called DuckTales: Scrooge's Loot on iOS and Android. Unlike the DuckTales games on NES and Game Boy and the new DTR, Scrooge's Loot isn't a sidescrolling adventure title, but rather a 3D multiplayer battle game complete with feathered customizable characters. Considering this is a game starring the miserly McDuck, it's also a bit surprising to find out the mobile title is free.
