What You Might Have Missed In DC’s June 2017 Solicitations

DC Comics
DC Comics

Every month, comic publishers release their solicitation announcements to provide information to readers and retailers on comics that are coming out in three months’ time, but there’s so much information dropped at once that a lot can slip through the cracks.

This month in DC's June solicitations, DC Rebirth brings back some more old favorites in a more traditional setting, some New 52 standout stars get a chance to return, some Golden Age heroes appear in the least likely place, and Aquaman gets hot!

‘Dark Days’ Are Coming To DC In Scott Snyder’s Epic Summer Event

Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair / DC Comics
Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair / DC Comics

While DC Comics hasn't been as event-orientated as its superhero comics competitors in recent years, the publisher is bringing back the summer event in a major way this year. Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV will team with Jim Lee, Andy Kubert and John Romita Jr. this summer for Dark Days: The Forge and Dark Days: The Casting, two one-shots that lead into a major event that Snyder has been building towards for years.

‘Batwoman’ #1 Delivers A Globetrotting Gay Adventure [Review]

BW_featured

Today sees the launch of the new Batwoman solo ongoing series, scripted by Marguerite Bennett, co-plotted by Bennett and James Tynion IV, with art by Steve Epting and colors by Jeremy Cox. At least I'm counting this as the launch, even though Batwoman Rebirth came out last month. That book was a great prologue to this series, but it's immediately clear that the new book is where the story really gets moving.

Good Thing: Jory And Hunter Take The Next Step In ‘Backstagers’ #6

Boom Studios
Boom Studios

Boom’s Backstagers is one of my favorite comics to premiere in the last year. Ryan Sigh’s lineart and Walter Baiamonte's colors bring the weird, gorgeous magical backstage world to life, but it’s also worth highlighting James Tynion IV’s writing, particularly his focus on overt, in-canon queer representation.

Before Backstagers #7 comes out on February 22, I want to take note of the loveliness that is Backstagers #6, published in January. Spoilers for #6, and for the series as a whole, below.

Azrael Returns In ‘Detective Comics’ #950 [Preview]

Detective Comics #

Say what you will about his ill-fated tenure as Batman, but Jean-Paul Valley always finds his way back into continuity somehow. It was only a few years ago that the original Azrael --- well, the original comic book Azrael, anyway, not the Angel of Death with four heads and a thousand wings whose body is made of billions of eyes and tongues --- returned to the page in Batman and Robin Eternal. And in February, he's making a pretty grand return in the flagship title of DC's Rebirth Era as Detective Comics hits its milestone 950th issue.

My World Overflows With Kate Kane: Bennett And Tynion On What Makes Batwoman Special, And Queering The DC Universe

DTC_featured

This week sees the release of Detective Comics #948, the first part of "Batwoman Begins," a two-part story that leads into the upcoming Batwoman solo series. That series will be scripted by Marguerite Bennett with art by Steve Epting, so Bennett has joined scripter James Tynion IV as co-plotter on this Detective story, featuring art by Ben Oliver, and Tynion in turn will co-plot Batwoman.

ComicsAlliance sat down with Bennett and Tynion to talk about who Kate Kane is, how she's different from Bruce Wayne, and why it's important to fill the DC Universe with queer characters --- including a new transgender character who will be introduced in this story.

The DC Universe Collides With Hanna-Barbera’s Most Beloved Characters In March

DCHB-Featured

While DC Comics has had a great 2016 largely thanks to its DC Rebirth initiative, the success of its updated Hanna-Barbera titles such as Future Quest and The Flintstones has been one of the most surprising hits of the year. Next year, DC is doubling down on its classic cartoon characters by teaming them up with some of the most iconic heroes in the DC Universe in a number of special annuals set for release in March.
