Born On A Monday: A Celebration Of Solomon Grundy

grundy_featured

Solomon Grundy can't tell you much about himself. The exact date of his birth is lost to time, and then there's the matter of whether he was born as Cyrus Gold in the 19th century, or if Grundy's birth came much later than that, when he rose up out of the swamp wearing Gold's corpse like a suit. But everyone knows that Solomon Grundy was born on a Monday.

So this Monday, which is also Halloween, seems like the perfect time to pay tribute to the original zombie supervillain, who was originally created by writer Alfred Bester and artist Paul Reinman.

Cast Party: Who Should Play DC Comics’ Legion of Doom?

ElleCollins_CastParty

This week I'm doing something a little different. With the DC movie universe expanding, all the talk about Suicide Squad, and the recent announcement that Black Manta will be in the Aquaman movie, I've been thinking about the future of DC supervillains on screen.

We've also been doing this fun DC Supervillain Draft, and that's got me thinking in particular about the Legion of Doom, who originated in the Challenge of the Superfriends cartoon, and what an interesting collection of classic DC villains they are. So I decided to cast the Legion of Doom.

Our Squad: The DC Supervillain Fantasy Draft, Part One

villaindraft-one

The Suicide Squad movie has brought some of DC's weirdest villains to the big screen even before some of the publisher's major heroes could make their debut, and judging by the movie's huge opening weekend, audiences are only too happy to meet the bad guys.

Of course, there are enough great DC supervillains to fill Belle Reve Prison several times over; many more than we might ever meet at the movie theatre. So for ComicsAlliance's third fantasy superteam draft, following on from our fantasy X-Men teams and our fantasy LGBTQ teams, we've asked our contributors to fight it out to put together the best DC supervillain teams, drawing only from the main line DC comics continuities.

Bruce Timm Returns To Batman In New DC Nation Short, ‘Batman Strange Days’

Batman Strange Days Short main
Warner Bros. Animation

The last time Batman appeared in a Warner Bros. animated production in the Bruce Timm "style," it was in the Justice League Unlimited series, which ended in 2004.

Now, the big-eared, Timm-designed version of Batman is back in a new short for Cartoon Network's DC Nation block, titled Batman Strange Days, which finds the Dark Knight taking on Hugo Strange and a mysterious, Solomon Grundy-like giant. It looks dark --virtually black and white or sepia -- and features Batman firing a huge gun evocative of Gundam Wing's Twin Buster Rifle marked "tear gas."

Check out a handful of stills in anticipation of the short's April 9 debut, after the jump.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Ydaer? Thgif!

Everyone's favorite backwards-talking superheroine magician is coming to kick some butt in Injustice: Gods Among Us, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has confirmed. She'll be available August 13 for 400 MS points on Xbox Live and $4.99 on the PlayStation Network. While her stage magician attire varies, Zatanna's Injustice outfit seems pretty in line with her classic look rather than her gem'ed-out superhero outfit or her New 52 duds, although that could change depending on if different character skins become available down the road.
