I can't think of a more appropriate title for the fourth episode of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead video game's second season than "Amid the Ruins."
After an unyieldingly intense end to the previous episode, there were few places this new episode could go in terms of upping the ante. So it doesn't even try. Instead, the game's writers and developers offer a chapter about people trying to dig out from the debris left behind by a major disaster, and forging ahead with their lives.
The first couple hours of Telltale Games' newest episode of its video game version of The Walking Dead, "In Harm's Way,"feel a little strange. Things move fairly slowly, and most of what the player does is fairly mundane. You do chores, basically. There's high drama, for sure, but a lot of it is happening around the lead character, Clementine, rather than to her.
Then the last act hits, and things go absolutely crazy. The story gets darker and more intense than it ever really has in the series, which is a high hurdle to clear. The shift, along with a few distracting creative decisions, make for what's probably the most uneven chapter in the series so far, but that seems to kind of be the point.
After all the acclaim and attention Telltale Games got for the first season of its The Walking Dead video game, it'd be perfectly understandable for the developers and writing team to simply stay the course. To their credit, they haven't done that with the first episode of the game's second season, titled "All That Remains." The interface and art style are slightly different, the characters have developed and grown, and, most noticeably, the tone has changed somewhat.
But while I'm all for keeping things fresh, I'm not sure the changes are entirely positive.
If you were wondering what's in store for the characters you remember from Telltale Games' first season of its The Walking Dead video game in the new second season, the new trailer makes it abundantly clear: peril.
