‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics’ #1 Comes Out of its Shell [Preview]

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 has seen its share of reprints over the years, including being retold in color. It’s a sticky issue for diehards and casual fans alike. After all, Eastman and Laird’s chunky style lends itself to any number of coloring interpretations while also defying artists to match its rich textures. Tom Smith’s Scorpion Studios is the latest to take on the challenge in IDW’s new ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics series, which kicks off this Wednesday, May 9. Rather than covering any of the story’s original art, Scorpion Studios seems to have worked to instill bright colors beneath the tale’s harder lines, bringing color to the figures from within. The coloring approach even retains the original tale’s (at times, endearingly smeary) use of screentones. Take a peek at our exclusive preview of the first seven pages from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics #1 after the cut to see what you think.
