‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Director Taika Waititi Promises a Funnier ‘Thor’ Movie

Taika Waititi delivered the funniest comedy of 2015 with What We Do in the Shadows, the vampire mock-doc that rightfully drew comparisons to This Is Spinal Tap. He’s back at Sundance this year with his follow-up indie Hunt for the Wilderpeople, which is already earning rave reviews. His next project will take him into the mainstream to helm Thor: Ragnarok, but will Waititi bring some of that signature sense of humor to Asgard? You bet.

As previously teased by Marvel’s Kevin Feige, Thor: Ragnarok is going to be more humorous than the previous Thor films, which are often regarded as the lesser products of the MCU. While speaking with The Wrap about his new film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Waititi confirmed that Thor: Ragnarok will be funnier while taking a slight dig at The Dark World.

When asked how he plans on making Ragnarok more humorous, Waititi explained, “I’ll just take the second Thor film and add some jokes to that.” Sounds easy enough! Kidding aside, if anyone can make a funny Thor movie, it’s Waititi, who has an impeccable sense of humor and heart.

So far, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are set to reprise their roles as Thor and Loki, with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk teaming up with the mighty thunder god for what the actor has described as a “road movie” in the vein of Midnight Run. Cate Blanchett is in talks to join the cast, with rumors suggesting that her role is that of the villainous Hela.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople does not yet have a release date, but with Waititi joining the MCU, it won’t be long before a studio snatches it up to capitalize on the director’s imminent mainstream breakthrough. Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
