Titan To Release 'Assassin's Creed: Awakening' Manga In English

Assassin's Creed has proved to be a very dependable franchise for Titan Comics, and as announced at San Diego Comic Con this past weekend, the publisher will be adding another title to its growing slate of comics based on the Ubisoft video game franchise. However, rather than an all-new original story, Assassin's Creed: Awakening is a translation of Yano Takashi and Oiwa Kenji's manga.

The new series is an adaptation of the video game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which follows the pirate protagonist Edward Kenway as he rises in power and stature as both a pirate and a member of the Assassins. Kenway is a pivotal character in the Assassin's Creed mythos as he is the grandfather to Assassin Creed III's Connor Kenway and father to Haytham Kenway, an Assassin traitor and member of the Templar Order.

The manga was initially released in 2013, serialized in the magazine Jump X, and does feature some differences from the video game, notably in its presentation of the modern day. In the game, the player controls an unnamed, unseen research analyst for Abstergo Entertainment living out the life Kenway via the animus, but in the manga adaptation the modern day protagonist was named Yanao Seijin.

Assassin's Creed: Awakening joins Assassin's Creed: Assassins, Assassin's Creed: Templars and Assassin's Creed: Last Descendants: Locus as part of Titan's growing line of comics based on the hit franchise. It may not be the last, as the cinematic adaptation starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard is due for release later this year, although this is the first year in many that there will not be a game release in the main series.
