Bandai’s S.H. Figuarts Super Mario Action Figure Coming In May
When Bluefin Tamashii Nations USA opened a survey to action figure collectors asking which licenses fans were most interested in last year, quite a few fans raised an eyebrow at the inclusion of Super Mario Bros. on the form. Once Bandai’s North American distributor of the hyper articulated S.H. Figuarts action figure line uploaded a question mark box from the franchise on its social media channels, though, it seemed as if a trip to the Mushroom Kingdom was surely in order. Today a display at the Nuremburg Toy Fair confirmed it: This May we’ll all be able to “Do the Mario” with all the articulation befitting Nintendo’s flagship plumber.
Though Bandai’s S.H. Figuarts has quite a bit in common with the upcoming Luigi Nendoroid from Good Smile Company accessory-wise, it’s clearly gotten its hands on a metaphorical mushroom. It’s bigger, comes with optional diorama sets and will likely fetch slightly more coins when it comes time for preorders.
Photos of the figure seem to indicate that there will be a standard version that comes packed with a single gold coin, a mushroom and a question mark box, with two optional diorama play sets available to amass as big an environment as fans care to build. One of the diorama sets seems to collect a green base, clear stand parts, two brick boxes, a coin, a Goomba and closed fist hand parts for Mario. The other set looks like it consists of a green base, clear stand parts, a Koopa Troopa shell, a Goomba tall and short warp pipe pieces, a gold coin and open palms for the Mario figure. Theoretically, fans could buy as many sets as they wanted and build… entire sidescrolling levels for their toy(!). Articulation-wise, this figure seems to pack all of the usual S.H. Figuarts articulation and should fit right in with GSC’s slightly taller 6″ Samus and Link Figmas, Super Smash Bros.-style.
