The question most often asked of the ComicsAlliance staff is a variation of, “Which comic books should I be reading?” or, “I’m new to comics, what’s a good place to start?” The Wednesday deluge of new comic books, graphic novels and collected editions can be daunting even for the longtime reader, much less for those totally unfamiliar with creators, characters and publishers, and the dark mysteries of comic book shopping like variants, pre-ordering, and formats. It’s with these challenges in mind that we’ve created Best Comic Books Ever (This Week), an ongoing guide curated by the ComicsAlliance staff. This is where new comics readers and seasoned Wednesday shoppers alike can find our picks of the best books the medium has to offer.

Cooking For Monsters In 'Brave Chef Brianna' from Kaboom
Kaboom, the kid-oriented imprint of Boom Studios, has a comic coming in Spring 2017 that looks perfect for anyone who loves MasterChef Junior almost as much as Gravity Falls. Brave Chef Brianna is written by fantasy author Sam Sykes with art by Selina Espiritu, and tells the story of Brianna Jakobsson, a talented chef who opens a restaurant in a city of monsters. It seems that was the only site she could afford, and she needs to prove herself to her father, who has set up a contest between her and her brothers. But succeeding as a chef in Monster City means cooking what monsters want to eat, and that has to be a little intimidating for a decidedly non-monstrous human like Brianna.

Death Can't Stop Punk Rock In 'Coady and the Creepies'
It's hard being a young punk rock band on the road. It got even harder for Corey, Criss, and Coady, three sisters who make up a band called the Creepies, when an accident left Corey with a scarred face, Criss in a wheelchair, and Coady dead. But they can't give up now, when the band's just started getting attention. So all three of them keep going, including Coady. Maybe being a ghost will make her an even better drummer.

Kyle Higgins On The Shocking Surprise In 'Power Rangers' #9
When Boom's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series began earlier this year, setting its story in the days after Tommy's arrival as the Green Ranger, it immediately started expanding on what Ranger fans already knew from the show. There were new dynamics in place, new powers for the villains, and even new reveals, such as the fact that Rita Repulsa had approached other characters with the power of the Green Ranger before settling on Tommy. And in the second arc, we got a brand new villain. Now, at the end of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #9, that new villain's identity has been revealed, and it's one of the most unexpected and surprising plot twists that we've seen in a good long while. To find out more about this development, ComicsAlliance spoke to Kyle Higgins about creating this new character alongside artist Hendry Prasetya and designer Jamal Campbell. Read on, but be warned: Major spoilers for this week's issue follow.
